Don't Starve

Klei Entertainment (2013)

Description

Developed by Klei Entertainment and Alternative Games, and published by Klei Entertainment, Don't Starve is an uncompromising wilderness survival video game that made its official debut with a release date in 2013. It plunges players into a darkly whimsical, procedurally generated world where survival requires constant vigilance, resource gathering, and adaptation to harsh environmental conditions. Blending roguelike elements with a hand-drawn art style heavily influenced by the works of filmmaker Tim Burton, the game quickly established itself as a standout title within the survival genre. The development of Don't Starve was driven by Klei Entertainment's desire to forge a new path in the industry without relying on traditional publishers. Founded by Jamie Cheng in 2005, the Canadian studio had previously made a name for itself with 2D side-scrolling action games like Shank and Mark of the Ninja. The concept for Don't Starve was born in December 2010 during a 48-hour internal game jam, where developers Kevin Forbes and Ju-Lian Kwan built a prototype featuring basic mechanics like a health meter and a day-and-night cycle. Internally dubbed "Project Not Sidescrolling," the idea was shelved until the studio finished its ongoing projects. Full development commenced in 2012, influenced by the sandbox survival elements of Minecraft, which was spearheading an industry trend of dropping players into unforgiving worlds with minimal instruction. The team initially pitched an early version of the game to Google for their Chrome Web Store, featuring a concept where players managed a town of pig-men. Eventually refining the focus to individual survival, Klei self-published the title on Steam Early Access, utilizing a unique two-for-one purchase model to build a robust player community before its full PC launch, which was later followed by console and mobile ports. At its core, Don't Starve tasks players with surviving as long as possible in a hostile, magical realm known as "The Constant". The gameplay loop revolves around the careful management of three primary metrics: Health, Hunger, and Sanity. Hunger depletes steadily by 75 points per day, requiring players to constantly forage for berries, farm seeds, hunt animals, or build crock pots to cook complex meals. The Sanity meter acts as a psychological survival mechanic, dropping when the player is in darkness, consumes raw or spoiled food, or engages in combat with monsters. If sanity falls below fifteen percent, the world distorts, and shadowy hallucinations physically manifest to attack the player. Time management is also critical, as the in-game clock cycles through day, dusk, and night. During the day, players must explore the map, harvest resources like flint, wood, and gold, and build science machines or alchemy engines to unlock new crafting tiers. When night falls, the player is forced to stay in the light of a campfire or a torch; remaining in total darkness results in a swift, unseen attack by a lethal entity known as Charlie. The narrative of Don't Starve is cryptic but rich, revolving around a diverse cast of eccentric characters pulled into the Constant. The primary protagonist is Wilson Percival Higgsbury, an ambitious but arrogant gentleman scientist. After a series of failed experiments in his home laboratory, Wilson is contacted through his radio by a mysterious voice offering him secret, forbidden knowledge. This voice belongs to Maxwell, the game's antagonist, who was originally a struggling British stage illusionist named William Carter. Upon discovering dark magic via an artifact known as the Codex Umbra, Maxwell became trapped on the Shadow Throne within the Constant, where he now pulls other survivors into the realm as part of a purgatory-like trial. Players can unlock additional characters as they gain experience, each possessing unique traits. For instance, Wilson can grow a magical beard that protects against winter temperatures and provides resurrection materials; Willow is a pyromaniac who is immune to fire damage; WX-78 is a robot whose stats can be upgraded by eating gears; and Wendy is accompanied by the protective ghost of her deceased sister, Abigail. Through the game's punishing "Adventure Mode," players navigate a gauntlet of grueling sequential worlds to finally confront Maxwell on his throne, eventually taking his place to free him. To continually evolve the uncompromising wilderness, Klei released three major single-player expansion packs that fundamentally altered the survival experience. "Reign of Giants," released in 2014, introduced two new seasons, Autumn and Spring, alongside dangerous new biomes, mechanics like wetness and overheating, and formidable seasonal bosses such as the Deerclops. In 2015, "Shipwrecked" transported players to a treacherous tropical archipelago, introducing boat crafting, sailing mechanics, monsoon flooding, volcanic eruptions, and new bosses like the Sealnado and Tiger Shark. "Hamlet," launched in 2018, brought an entirely different approach by placing players in an inland jungle featuring a sprawling civilization of aristocratic Pig-men. This expansion challenged veterans with a functional currency and trading economy, town houses, and ancient ruins to explore. Finally, due to overwhelming community demand, the developers released "Don't Starve Together," a standalone multiplayer version of the game. Initially launched as a free expansion for existing owners in 2015 before seeing a wider release, it allowed up to six players to cooperate in base building, resource gathering, and fending off seasonal threats. Don't Starve Together balanced the character roster for cooperative synergy, introduced ghost mechanics for deceased players, and continues to receive extensive updates and rebalancing. Through its intricate mechanics, darkly charming aesthetic, and unrelenting difficulty, Don't Starve has left an indelible mark on the indie gaming landscape, transforming a small game jam project into a massive franchise.
