Borderlands 4 continues the franchise's chaotic, looter-shooter legacy on the alien planet of Kairos. Its first expansion, Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, shifts the tone toward cosmic horror within the frozen, derelict-filled landscape of The Whispering Glacier. Players join Ellie to confront an eldritch threat while utilizing the new gambling-themed Vault Hunter, C4SH the Rogue. Amidst the intense boss fights and alien monoliths, the side mission "Ghost Stories" perfectly captures the series' irreverent humor. Located in Crooked Teeth, it starts as a classic supernatural tale about helping a spirit named Nick resolve unfinished business to find peace. However, the mission brilliantly subverts these tropes; Nick actually loves being a ghost and desperately wants to avoid the afterlife. He tasks players with sabotaging his friends, who are unwittingly trying to help him "cross over" by setting high scores on an arcade machine. It is a hilarious, memorable highlight of the expansion.
