Platform 8

PLAYISM (2024)

Description

Platform 8 is a first-person psychological horror and anomaly detection video game that immerses players in a tense, looping environment. Developed by KOTAKE CREATE and published by PLAYISM, the game saw its official release in 2024, arriving first on PC in May before expanding to the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 in November of that same year. Serving as a spiritual successor—and narratively, somewhat of a prequel—to the highly successful walking simulator The Exit 8, Platform 8 builds upon the foundation of its predecessor while introducing new stakes and mechanics. It trades the liminal spaces of an underground pedestrian passageway for the claustrophobic confines of a seemingly never-ending Japanese subway train, tasking players with a simple yet deeply unsettling directive: keep an eye out for anomalies and find a way out. The premise of the game traps the player in an endlessly looping sequence of train carriages. The ultimate goal is to navigate forward until reaching the titular eighth station, finally breaking the supernatural loop to escape. The environment is heavily inspired by the mundane realism of Japanese subways, amplifying the eerie contrast when the paranormal intrusions begin to occur. In a signature touch of dark humor and thematic isolation, the player is not entirely alone; a lone passenger can be seen in every car, perpetually glued to his smartphone and entirely oblivious to the grotesque horrors and spatial distortions occurring around him. This apathetic citizen remains seated even as ghosts manifest or massive, unnatural entities peer through the train's windows. Gameplay in Platform 8 revolves around observation, trial and error, and survival. While its predecessor required players to turn around and walk back the way they came upon spotting an anomaly, Platform 8 demands that the player constantly press forward. The challenge lies in dealing with the anomalies as they appear, as the sequel introduces lethal threats. Failing to correctly navigate a hazardous anomaly or falling victim to a hostile entity will result in the player's death, immediately sending them back to Carriage 0 to restart the loop. To aid the player, some carriage doors feature yellow warning signs, heavily implying that an anomaly is present inside. If a player fails to notice an anomaly in a marked carriage and simply walks through, they are penalized and reset to the beginning. The anomalies themselves are randomized to keep the experience unpredictable and range from subtle environmental changes to outright hostile encounters. Players might walk into a carriage bathed in sinister red light, navigate through near-darkness while evading aggressive ghosts, or encounter physical impossibilities like a giant eye peering into the train or a massive hand reaching inside. Other anomalies involve specific rules dictated by the train's LED displays, which usually inform the player of their current carriage but will occasionally display ominous survival clues like "Don't Look" or "Don't Leave". Dealing with these hazards often requires quick thinking or careful observation, as some anomalies will disappear if the player simply waits, while others demand that the player sprint to the next door before being caught. The game even features a secret achievement called "Kukudo," which mocks the player by permanently trapping them if they ignore a warning signboard and step off the train into a foggy terminal. Despite its brief playtime, which typically ranges from fifteen to sixty minutes, Platform 8 effectively distills the anomaly-spotting genre into a highly concentrated dose of tension and atmospheric horror. It retains the smooth performance and high-fidelity visuals that made its predecessor a viral hit, running seamlessly across PC and consoles for a budget price of $3.99. Upon its release, it garnered a very positive reception from players for its creative scares, interactable environments, and the elevated danger of its gameplay loop. While some critics noted that the game's short length and trial-and-error design make it a fleeting experience, the clever environmental puzzles, the unpredictable randomization of the horrors, and the lingering dread of the infinite train ride solidify Platform 8 as a memorable and expertly crafted psychological horror game.
